1913 hours and 44 minutes of real life

I graduated 79 days 17 hours and 44 minutes ago on May 17th 2010 from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. I've got a beautiful hand printed diploma framed in mahogany and the right to say I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Fast forward to August 5th 2010 and I am working at an IT company in Halifax, Nova Scotia and using very few of the skills I learned in class at university. In fact I'm pretty sure I'm using none of any skill I possess. The work is boring at best and an extremely boring at worst. Though I will admit it pays well. I get up, go to work, go home, eat, sleep and repeat. NO ONE TOLD ME REAL LIFE IS SO BORING!

Luckily I've got it in my head that I want to be an actor, so I may be able to escape this real life thing once in while a do something I enjoy.

And I do actually want to be an actor. I'm not someone who decides after one stint in a high school production and just jumps in with no training, experience, or knowledge of the business; so GOD FORBID someone tells me one more time that acting is a hard business to get into. I KNOW! In fact, most actors you tell that to probably already know and have experienced it first hand. Why everyone assumes we're so ignorant of the business is beyond me. End rant....

Anyway, I want to act and so I will be taking my first step toward that goal on September 27th when I start an eight month training program at Neptune Theatre in Halifax. In 53 days I can blissfully escape the real world for four hours a day four days a week and return home to theatre world!

The Pre-Professional Training Program at Neptune runs at the theatre for eight months and includes classes in voice, movement, text, singing and dance; plus discussions of all the plays preformed in the current season and a list a 25 plays to read.

My audition was in June and I have never been more nervous. I spent three weeks preparing two monologues, one from Nicky Silver's "The Food Chain" and one from Shakespeare's "As You Like It", and the song Part of Your World from "The Little Mermaid". The auditions were held at Neptune in a rehearsal room and the current head of the theatre school was the only person present.

Immediately afterwards I felt great about it, but as the days went by and the deadline at which we were supposed to hear back went zooming by and still no letter had arrived, I began to get worried. I had taken to calling home everyday at 11am to inquire whether the mail had arrived, to which L would reply "no letter today" before I could open my mouth to ask. Eventually, in order to keep my sanity and fragile ego from shattering to bits I had to tell myself I didn't get in and set to work figuring out what I was going to do for the next year. I had a plan to move to Europe as an Au Pair for a year before re-auditioning for the program and starting to build my acting resume.

Then, a few weeks into July, after a very long and horrible day, in which my computer decided to declare a vendetta against me, I realized I has less than $5.00 in my bank account because I hadn't been given my first pay-cheque yet, and I lost my last bus ticket (and obviously couldn't buy more) so I was forced to walk the 6 miles across the city to home, I got a call. Not a letter, A CALL, with a real live person from Neptune Theatre who was telling me I had been accepted into the program. I was ecstatic, even the fact that I was walking home in 35 degree weather across a long bridge with no shade couldn't dampen my mood. I had been convinced that my only alternative to going to Neptune was running away to Europe for a year (which would be so bad but I wanted this program more). I called F right away and then Boston Dad and J and then my sister and probably just about every other family member and person I've met in the past four years. So Europe was cancelled, I was going to acting school and the hunt for an apartment for F and I was on (more on that in another post), because as much as I love the Bennett family, I do need my own place.

Only 1272 and 39 minutes 'till departure from real life!

The Cat Came Back

Hello all!

I apologize for being very un-devoted in my blogging but as usual time has gotten away from me. Here is a quick catch up of all the things I've done since my last post.

The Holiday Season

Christmas came and went with a fabulous trip to BC to visit family. I had a wonderful time. I went up to Whistler to go snowboarding and took a day of lessons which tired me out but helped me a lot with my technique. I came home with bruises but it was well worth it. I also got to try out the new hot tub at my Dad's new house in North Vancouver. It was amazing!!!

Then I went back home to Toronto to see my Mum, Sister and Grandma. Christmas was prosperous as usual but my favourite thing was actually putting together the gift baskets I made for my family. Each one included: lots of baking (cupcakes, meringues, truffles, cookies and macaroons, all made by moi in a long day of battle with stoves and flour), a bottle of wine from Jost Winery in Nova Scotia, a photograph by me, and a few little odds and ends.

The rest of the holidays were spent lazing around home, visiting with friends and sleeping in lots. A very good time I have to say.

January: Back to school, back to the theatre!

On January 6th I flew back to Sackville and to lots of snow. Immediately I started in with classes and "more importantly" working on costumes for the big musical FAME! Though it was stressful at times, I loved the end result. Very 80's!

Next was The Lover and Crave. Two shows directed by friends of mine. I helped out by doing some fun sound design and taking photos of The Lover.

Next is Salad Days, a wonderful new musical by friends Landon Braverman and Jason Swan. A small devoted cast is working hard to present a staged reading of the script (by Jason) and the songs (by Landon). The show goes up March 6th and 7th inWindsor Theatre.

Then coming up in late March 17th-21st is Bat Boy: the musical! A hilarious telling of a story inspired by the World Weekly News. I will be yet again venturing into the world of costumes and make-up to help bring the story to life.
And last but definitely not least is Blood Relations, a great play by Sharon Pollock that tells the story of Lizzie Borden, the infamous late 18th century acquitted murderess from Fall River MA. More to come on that show in future posts.

Travel:

Currently I am visiting family in Boston and have had an amazing weekend. Lots of shopping and adventures to interesting places. Stay tuned for a post about my visit to the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, the very house that the infamous murders were committed in.

In four days I will be jet setting again, this time off to London England to visit my Mum. This will be my first trip to London (besides a one night stay in a hotel outside Heathrow four years ago). I will try my best to post all my adventures there online as well.

Well, there was 2 1/2 months in the life of me in a few hundred words. Hopefully the next updates will be a lot more frequent.

Love and octopi!

L'Argument's Last Night

Wow! It's been a crazy week! On Wednesday l'Argument opened in Windsor Theatre with an amazing performance. Since then we've had 2 other awesomo performances and now tonight is the last night of the show. I have to say I've had the most wonderfull time working with Tintamarre. I've made friends with so many great people and got to work on a very fun show. I'm going to miss it very much, what will I do with all my free time? I'm going to miss rehearsals and collaborating on the script and show. I'm going to miss the crazy green room antics we've had every night. I'm going to miss performing for some pretty awesome audiences. Most of all I'm going to miss the family that has formed with all the people involved, hopefully we'll see each other lots over the next semester. Congrats everyone in Tintamarre! Let's make this the best show it can be! Merde!

Snow Fight part one.

Today we were all set to go to Tintamarre rehearsal, the fourth last one, but it was canceled because of the crazy blizzard we had last night. When I woke up in the morning there was a good two feet of snow outside and the plows had been by, making a HUGE pile of snow in our parking lot. So what should one do with a huge pile of snow? Have a crazy fun snow fight is what. So even though Tintamarre rehearsal was canceled Francesca and I decided to have our potluck anyway, as the weather cleared up a bit. Not very many people could make it unfortunately but it was still a great night! We ate lots of food, played Cranium and best of all had a snow fight! Snow fights are the best part of winter! Here are some pictures of the epic event!

TINTAMARRE!!!!

I had to post again to talk about the wonderfulness that is Tintamarre. It is a bilingual theatre troupe that collaborates here at Mount Allison each fall semester on an idea that becomes a play. This year's show is Argument, about a young girl turns to her journal after an argument with her family. The journal then comes alive and hilarity and fun ensues.

This is my first year participating in the show. I have seen the two previous shows before me, Floralie and Trocshop, and have finally joined this year. So far I've had a wonderful experience with all the people involved. It's a big group, with 33 actors in the show, so I've met lots of new friends.

The process started in September with weekly meetings to talk and improv and collaborate on characters, plot, set, and costumes. By October our director had a script containing many of our ideas, ready to start casting. The casting was also collacorative, with everyone trying for different parts and recommending others for roles. Since then we've been rehearsing lines and blocking and today we are a week away from opening night.

One interesting challenge for me in this show has been that I don't read/speak/understand French that well, and since 70% of the show is French it has proved to be a learning experience. But I'm getting better. I'm slowly beginning to understand things more and my pronunciation is not too bad. Soon I'll be chatting with the best of 'em.

So if you're around Wednesday November 26th through Saturday November 29th come see Argument! Pictures from rehearsal are coming soon!
